One of the most common questions new bloggers ask is:
“How many words should my blog post have?”
You may hear that longer articles always rank better, but that's not necessarily true.
There is no perfect word count for every blog post. The right length depends on the topic, the search intent, and how much information the reader needs.
Here's a simple way to think about it.
1. Write as Much as the Topic Requires
Don't add unnecessary paragraphs just to reach a specific word count.
If you can answer a question properly in 800 words, there is no need to turn it into a 2,500-word article.
On the other hand, a detailed topic may require several thousand words.
Focus on completeness, not length.
2. Match the Reader's Search Intent
Think about what the reader wants.
For example:
“What is SEO?”
This might only require a short explanation.
But:
“How to improve SEO for a new website”
may need a detailed step-by-step guide.
Your article should provide enough information to satisfy the reason behind the search.
3. Don't Sacrifice Quality for Length
A 1,000-word article full of useful information can be much better than a 3,000-word article filled with repetition.
Avoid adding:
Repeated explanations
Unnecessary introductions
Filler paragraphs
Information that doesn't relate to the topic
Every section should have a purpose.
4. Look at Similar Articles
Before writing, search for your topic on Google.
Look at the types of articles that appear and consider:
What topics do they cover?
How detailed are they?
What questions do they answer?
Is there useful information they haven't covered?
Don't copy their length or structure. Use the results to understand what readers expect.
5. Make Longer Articles Easy to Read
If your topic requires a long article, don't publish one huge block of text.
Break it into:
Short paragraphs
Headings
Bullet points
Numbered steps
Examples
Images where useful
This makes longer content much easier to read.
6. Think About Your Audience
Different audiences may prefer different levels of detail.
A beginner looking for a quick answer may prefer a short guide.
Someone researching a complicated subject may want a detailed tutorial.
Always ask:
“What does my reader need?”
rather than:
“How many words do I need?”
7. Don't Chase a Magic Word Count
There isn't a magic number that guarantees better rankings.
Search engines aim to provide useful results to users, so simply making an article longer doesn't automatically make it better.
Instead of trying to hit a specific number, make sure your article is:
Helpful
Clear
Relevant
Well organized
Easy to read
Up to date
Final Thoughts
So, how long should a blog post be?
As long as it needs to be.
Some posts may need 500 words. Others may need 2,000 or more.
Don't write to reach a number. Write to answer the reader's question completely and clearly.
The goal isn't to write the longest blog post. It's to write the most useful one for your reader.
